- Ubuntu - friendly Linux! Installation is a breeze, I have this on my laptop and it picked up my wireless network card right off the bat - getting wireless networking up and running on other distros has always been quite stressful for me but Ubuntu was so easy... - http://www.ubuntu.com - Ubuntu run Drupal :)

- gVim - powerful text editor - there's a steep learning curve involved but if you're working with code on a daily basis it's well worth your time getting to grips with it - http://www.vim.org
- Remote debugger interface to DBGp protocol - provides debugging in Vim with Xdebug - http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1152
- Open Office - suite of applications, create documents that you can export as PDF without expensive software, write letters, edit spreadsheets - http://www.openoffice.org
- The Gimp - image manipulation tool with similiar functionality to Adobe Photoshop - http://www.gimp.org
